I almost love this photo. I love the concept, but didn't love the shot right away. After some looking I think it is because (and I know this isn't really happening but...) it looks like the person's hand is pushing the dog's head to the floor rather than cudling. Maybe a nice ear rubbing or something. Also not sure if you lose too much detail with it, but maybe better in b&w.

Beautiful shot and perfect timing with the rainbow on the blue sky. The wide angle lens creates a bit of a fish eye bend to tthe outter parts of the picture which I don't really like, however it could add to the photo in that this is some sort of mystical place.

Do I understand your question then, is it hopeless and forlorn?

Awesome shot bro! Good editing. Congrats on your last photo too... My only fear is that someone will nominate your photo for disqualification due to there being no sholders in the shot. Hope not, because I see a lot of photos in this competition that don't belong (HIGH CONTRAST). So, I think this has a shot at a ribbon. 10 from me.
