Cowspaceby RemieComment: In one sense, I like this a lot... it made me chuckle a bit. My only gripe is that I don't think the sky is really adding the "wow" that the negative space challenge is seeking. Still cool, though! |

bird on a wireby FranziskaLangComment: Nice & sharp -- very good! One thing I remember learning in college while we were being taught about composition... for whatever artsy fartsy reason, they say you're not supposed to have elements originating out of the corners of shots. In other words, to suit the real art critics, the power line shouldn't come directly out of the corners, it should be off-set a bit. Anyway, that's just for what it's worth :) |

The Smithfield Street Bridgeby alanfreedComment: Just thought I'd add a couple "where my mind was" comments to this one. To me the challenge was to make use of negative space ("space which isn't the subject") to create a "wow" effect. My thought here was that the water/sky would be the negative space surrounding the bridge. I came upon this scene where a large neon sign illuminates the train tracks, and I thought that would be an interesting use of the "negative space." The problem with this is that, in reality, what happened was that the tracks became a distraction, and kind of became a secondary subject or co-subject of the shot... and they didn't really relate to the bridge in a way that enhanced the subject. So the end result was a lot of "what the heck is with the red tracks" comments, which in retrospect is a very good question! Thanks for the comments -- while hardly my best placing during the challenges, this has probably been the week I have learned the most about an aspect of photography, which is what I'm here for! |
