Look At Me!by stephanComment: Critique Club
Initial thoughts
Great colours and quite dynamic.
Composition/ Content
I like the squared crop (despite what you say below) – I am a big fan (and user) of non-standard-ratio crops.
Interesting content though my point of focus is a little confused – I find myself looking more at the bright blue object beneath the sign than at the sign itself. I also find the road lights leading my eye away into the distance – this is actually interesting as the objects on the left then pull me back to the foreground.
Background
Nice converging lines – I like that there is detail towards the front but less as we look further away – and the colours really convey night time road conditions.
Camera Work - Technical
Seems very grainy but I like it – enhances the night-time feel.
Digital Processing - Technical
Image quality seems fine – a little jagged around the white of the road sign.
I find it hard to say much as it's obviously a deliberate over-processing - I am not very knowledgeable about such processing.
Fits The Challenge
Yup!
Your Opinion On The Photo
Interesting and invites another look. Unusual colours and composition retain the attention. Message edited by author 2003-01-31 10:01:03. |

Something Oldby sulamkComment: Looking back at my comment (below) I realise how crass and insensitive it was. To suggest an image of an old veteran holding his medals makes an assumption that the brave soldier pictured was one of the lucky ones who did make it back. Apologies if I upset you back when I made my original comment.

Lost Soulby jmsetzlerComment: Critique Club
Initial thoughts
Interesting idea, a little too white at the top right.
Composition/ Content
Ghost idea is interesting though the expression on your face is a little grim – I would think a ghost would be happy to enjoy such a pretty location!
The area is pretty but I don’t think black and white does anything for it – on this occasion it makes the image seem dull or slightly life-less – perhaps with a ghost in it that is the idea!
I like the triangle made by the lower edge of the frame and the fencing.
Background
Background is kind of foreground as well! I find it too light in the area of trees at top middle to right.
Camera Work - Technical
OK except exposure/ lighting.
Digital Processing - Technical
Seems fine.
Fits The Challenge
I have no idea – I can’t figure out from the assigment page which challenge this is in and I have had a quick look in Landscape for Lost Soul and can’t find it.
Your Opinion On The Photo
Reasonably interesting, not one I̢۪d be looking at again and again.
EDIT: OK I went via your profile page and it's from Stranger ...
Yes it fits the challenge. Message edited by author 2003-01-13 04:37:24. |

I Love Parisby prkembyComment: What an unusual angle of a familiar and oft-photographed monument! I believe that the strength of this image is down to the excellent and simple composition which really uses the Rule of Thirds very effectively. I love the near horizontal line across the lower third - it balances very well against the curved vertical of the tower. The intensity of the light against the deep blueness of the sky is also very striking. 9, Kavey |

A weary traveler restsby bil99Comment: Critique Club
Initial thoughts
Lovely quality of light.
Composition/ Content
I like the content of this image –a butterfly resting during it’s journey.
The colour of the live green and dead brown grasses contrast nicely with the vivid orange, black and white of the butterfly.
In terms of composition I would be tempted to crop in more closely – I’d keep the two blades to the left of the butterfly that go from top to bottom of the frame at different angles – I’d crop the left to exactly the point at which the green blade hits the top of the image. From the right I’d crop in until I had an almost square image. This is, of course, only my highly subjective opinion! :)
Background
Nicely thrown out of focus – nothing to compete with main subjects.
Camera Work - Technical
Nice lighting and exposure.
Post Processing - Technical
I like the border you̢۪ve selected. Processing of image seems fine.
Fits The Challenge
Yes, though not as obviously as it could do. If the image was viewed alone (even including title) I don̢۪t know that it would suggest Travel to me.
Your Opinion On The Photo
I like it, I think composition could be improved to make it more striking. Message edited by author 2003-01-12 13:44:55. |

WINTER by Tori Amosby indigo997Comment: On first glance at this one I mentally scored it a little lower - it wasn't until I looked again and saw the lady in the red coat that it really clicked for me as a stronger image. I like the water flow (slow shutter speed thing) as the whites it gives in the water complement the white of the snow. This is almost monotone and the red of the woman pulls it back into colour. I like that contrast. I think the position of the woman isn\'t ideal - she vies for attention with the tree trunk. 7, Kavey |

hidden placeby annaintheskyComment: I really like the way this image is life-sized - at least it is on my monitor!
Very simple, holds my interest. I am often a fan of shallow DOF, and I like that the tip is a little out of focus, but I think my preference on this one would be for just a touch more DOF.

The Roseby autoolComment: Such a simple subject and yet such a strong photo. This gets a 10 from me because of it's incredible detail and vibrancy. I want to reach out and touch it. I almost think I can smell it! The black background is very effective and I like the subtle use of DOF - only the stem in the lower corner is out of focus - spot on! Colour and lighting are excellent. This is the kind of image I can imagine people dismissing as cliched, or lacking in imagination, but I think it's so excellently executed that it has very strong appeal regardless! |
