Seeking the Shadeby joezlComment: Good subject, but also well treated in this bold composition. It's the great, burning height of the wall that is the essence of this scene, and establishes the context for the tiny person to be cowering in shelter. I also like the inclusion of the patches of peeling paint at upper right - so glad you were confident enough to leave them there! 8. |

Stormy weatherby stupotComment: I like the not-quite-symmetry of this landscape, and the beautiful tonal progression from front to back. The exposure & processing is great - there's just enough visible to make it more than a silhouette, but not enough to dilute the essence of the scene with irrelevant details. It's perfectly composed, too. 8. |

Unforgivenby PhilComment: This has some great jagged edges (metaphorically as well as literally), that makes it so convincing for the concept expressed in the title. Would it be as powerful without the title? I'm not sure, but I think so. Therefore: 8. |

Cape Spearby jduffettComment: An understated landscape, but with the added charm of including a miniature landscape-within-a-landscape in the foreground rock and pools; a clever subtlety that has only recently been brought to my attention as a landscape technique. For that and several other reasons, this is a very satisfying and "complete" work. 8. |

A Photo Opportunityby milo655321Comment: Opportunity for him, but inspiration for you. Well done. A very fine documentary photograph, and they never go out of fashion. 8. |

Sheby bucketComment: My number one choice of my four 10's in the challenge,
It has tension and beauty together. Several bold, unorthodox ideas are combined with just enough convention to reassure any viewer who begins to feel too disoriented. Such an original and subtly erotic tribute to the subject ... but that's not all! All this is done without the inclusion of a single photographic cliche. A beautiful work. 10.5 |

Canterbury Plains Vistaby SimonjwComment: I've seen the Canterbury Plains many times, but not quite from this superb viewpoint. It's a very fine and thoughtful landscape photograph, because it beautifully captures the odd juxtaposition that exists there of wild, scree-covered alpine slopes and bucolic, ordered pastoral plains. And the balance you've chosen between those two worlds is exactly right ... you've included just enough of each. Finally, the centred horizon and the resultant sky vista is perfect, too. This image works like a good cocktail ... it tastes better than any of its ingredients alone, and it leaves me wanting another one! 8. |

wintry walkby xtineComment: Beautiful example of sympathetic use of processing to enhance the qualities of the image that were already there. The reflections of the walkers makes the centred "horizon" perfect. Nice work. 8. |

Inspiredby whiteroomComment: This is wonderful. It is the most artistically complex and sophisticated image in the challenge, and certainly among the most interesting, too. The scene appears candid, in the sense that nothing was staged for the shot, but the composition and the ordering of elements (including the light) within the photograph is meticulous and masterly. These are the photographs I love: cerebral, beautiful, complex and demanding, but also apparently effortless ... I can recognise 'em when I see 'em, but I just can't take 'em myself! Maybe in 2006? 10. |
