cagedby dragonladyComment: This was surprisingly under-appreciated, and there's no clue in the comments as to why. I saw it only after the challenge, but I'd have placed in in the top ten (and certainly higher than any of the top three). But even leaving my erratic tastes aside, it had many qualities that should have been embraced by the leaden masses at DPC as well. It has beautiful colours and textures, and the composition is classically appealing. There is also a certain amount of very charming whimsy; leaves and fruit, separated by the wire mesh ... surely there's some irresistible allegorical (or at least figurative) dimension to that? Maybe you should have just hammered a fistful of nails into the apples. Message edited by author 2006-05-24 19:38:21. |

I gave this a higher score than I scored the three ribbon winners combined!
What a poor judge I am! Fortunately, some other poor judges liked it too.
Brilliant photograph ... maybe you are the Dutch Don Quixote? |

Still, againby Rae-AnnComment: Beautiful light and textures. Very nice contrasting shapes. This has the feel of a fine painting. 8. |

stainlessby creeComment: A very clever modern classic. Love the fact that the diagonal bands of sunlight stop before the edge of the image. It makes a solid barrier on the right that keeps my attention from wandering; I am instead left ricocheting around inside the frame. Interesting and very creative. 8. |

P A U S Eby messerschmittComment: First subtract all those people with a myopic definition of Still Life, then take away those who can't recognise a good photograph anyway. What's left is not enough votes to lift this brilliant work above a score in the mid-5's. Hell, it's so good it probably won't even make 5!
Presumably, in view of your wry title, you were prepared for the dismal "Not a Still Life" crowd. But I'll bet nothing will have prepared you for how seriously this will be underestimated as a photograph. 10. |

Emu Eggsby pointandshootComment: Beautiful glow and a sympathetic still life study. The combination of the jade-like eggs and the honey-warm basket is a lovely pairing of colours, textures and tones. Also an elegant juxtaposition of "pre-life" (eggs) and "post-life" (timber basket). I think this is what a classical still life is all about. 9. |

Organicby jenesisComment: Ambitious; a rare quality here. Simple lighting and very interesting processing. Direct, expressionless gaze strips away all the behavioural frippery and does indeed get right down to the structural, molecular level. The image also has distinctly sci-fi, androgenous flavour (hope that doesn't offend you) that I think is very compelling. The total effect is riveting. 9. |
