| 09/12/2002 05:40:00 AM | Granny Smithsby KrazyKatComment: This is a good shot. But, I can see a tiny flaw with the composition. The main subject is perhaps a little to central in my opinion. I think that off-setting the fruit, to the right and down in this case, would weaken the strength of the slightly overpowering background and boost the central subject. This is only my opinion. I love the way the apples blend into the darkness on the left edge, but there is a slight glare on the apple skin. Try bouncing or diffusing the light source in some wayâ€Â¦ That said, it might sound like I don't like the shot – on the contrary, I think it's a great shot (8) | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 09/11/2002 06:13:00 AM | Frostbiteby freetimeComment: This is a good idea, but I fear there are a few technical matters that – in my opinion – need looking at. The overall feel of the shot is lost mainly because the composition is not right. The background is cluttered and this draws attention away from the main subject. Also, the use of flash on a reflective surface has created a slight – but noticeable – over exposure of the main subject. I personally think that close cropping the freezer bag to include just part of the chopping board with the spilled contents, plus using a bounced flash or available light would have turned a good idea into a great shot. If you look closely at the freezer bag contents that have spilled out – you'll see a wonderful array of colours that blend beautifully because of the frosting, pull away, and it all gets lost to the overpowering background. Now, having pulled the picture apart, the idea works well in itself and the overall picture is not as bad as my comments make it sound. The way you have thought about the central composition of the subject works well. Sorry to be so negative. Good luckâ€Â¦ |
| 09/11/2002 05:55:00 AM | Gin & Tonicby shedonistComment: Another really well thought out and superbly executed shot. The composition is first class and the achieved effect is mouth wateringly good. Terrific use of macro and lighting. Overall, the shot leaps out and is punctuated by making the viewer – me in this case – become fanciful of a Gin and Tonicâ€Â¦ (10) |

| 09/12/2002 04:46:00 AM | still lifeby lecookComment: This is a classic. It is a superbly constructed still life. The use of balanced colours and textures give the shot a relaxed rather than cluttered feel. It also uses the classic triangle placement which gives the shot equilibrium of subjects, thus making easy to look at. The lighting in this shot is also perfect, as is the angle the shot was taken. The mixed, but carefully placed objects, are made interesting by this really superb example of perfect, and highly professional, composition. You should do a tutorial based around this shot after the challengeâ€Â¦ (and I'm not joking) (10+++) |
