The Lowly Wrenchby bledfordComment: Makes me think plumbing, but does nto make me think technology or even low technology. This is an item that has stood the test of time over the evolution of plumbing for quite some time. The image on the other hand is very well done: simple, focused and balanced with only the upper right section being too well lit compared to the rest of the shot. The border is great and the perfect color. High marks for composition and presentation, some loss on challenge interpretation from the viewer. |

"A Couple of Brownies"by SamTComment: When I see camera's of this style and 8mm movie cameras in general, I cannot help but to think of early electronics. These were the 'gadgets' of the day. Certainly low-tech as the challenge title implies, but outside fo the challenge as the details instruct. Otherwise, this is a fabulous portrait of some toys of yesteryear. The balance of box vs box+camera, framing the starmite is very nice. A little too much light behind the yellow box, making the background a bit too noticable. May have wanted to clone out the meeting of the wall and platform to smooth it out a bit.
Overall high marks for composition, clarity of subject and detail, serious detraction for electronica. |

Hand Mixerby BrenbComment: I like everything about this picture. The framing in a square offsetting the roundness of the subject, the mild sepia toning and the modern-feel fo the crisp, sharpness in the image as a whole. The cookbook and radio (yikes I see electronics!) in no way impact the real subject of the hand mixer, in fact, they are such an after thought as to be a perfect background. Nice Job: a top contender! |

Skeleton Keyby GeneralEComment: Unsure if this is galvanized, green paint, or silver. Very interesting texture to the whole and well framed. Something in the depth of the subject on the head of the key is casting greyish shadows on the side and in the holes. This is very distracting. I see no real technology in a key or in current key use/design, but can see the implied technology of advancement in security and find that with some interpretation that this subject fits the challenge artistically. Average marks on all levels: challenge, composition and cleanness of image. Extra points for a subject that has an interesting texture and form. |

Can Openerby kyeboshComment: That piece of metal is just gross looking! It would be hard to choke down the meal that it opened. Great low tech choice, no interpretation needed. The framing and crop is fine as is the DOF, but the subjects have a turn off factor that rivals the message. You should take a Dremel or Brillo, clean up the can opener, peel the label off the can and reshoot a black and white with maximum impact. Very high marks for challenge interpretation and composition, some deduction for subject that makes me want to wash dishes. |

Hammer and Anvilby drydocComment: Although this image is somewhat busy, the inferenece to low technology or at least old ways is very clear here. Good job of catching light in what seems a low light circumstance (fill flash?) I think a tight crop would make this a more artistic and improve the presentation, but find the link to the challenge to be very solid. |

All Wound Upby mocabelaComment: Hmm...first vote and comment did not stay, so here goes again...
Nice border and use of negative space. Watch is an easy link to low tech for me. Highlights on the fob ring and shadows on the bottom of the watch were eyecatching to me. I liked the way the light caught the crystal, reflecting the scratch and giving the glass presence. Missing second hand is distracting, but not something that affects the score. Overall a high marking image. |

Sailingby TranquilComment: An impressive high-key 'color' image. Very artistisic presentation, well balanced and framed/cropped. Te contrasts seem a bit harsh, but could be expected. I do not find it hard to relate this to low tech comparing to other modes of boating (motorized, cruise ships) although the technology inference does require some interpretation. |

Sharpening a Carpenter's Pencilby Dr.ConfuserComment: This is a very solid image. The focus is dead on, textures are bold, hand markings are a striking contrast to the scrathes on the knife. There seems to be an overabundance of Dodging on the forward hand's fingers in the shadowy area and this is very distracting. I do not see low tech here except in comparision to a pencil sharpener, but pencil sharpeners don't really invoke ideas of technological advancement to me. Some very strong points in this overall, one major distraction and something of a leap (for me) on the challenge itself. |

In Times Gone Byby BAMartinComment: Low technology, no electronics. Hmmm....I see a great b/w composition of an aged/abandoned building and a tractor, but this does not seem to invoke technology to me, even low tech, in some ways, the tractor almost contrasts the age of the building, making it seem higher tech than the rest of the picture. The tones are great, framiing and crop right on, but the subject matter seems could be confusing in the realm of low tech. |
