several problems with this photo. the first is the lighting, it is just a bit too dark to get any detail in the walls. (they are in the shadows, and admittedly, to have exposed "this" shot to get detail in the walls would have washed out the remainder of the photo...catch22) the second is the composition. the straight-on... "here's a picture of an old house" look just doesn't interest me visually. third, the focus is a bit soft. the subject matter meets the challenge, it just wasn't presented in a very engaging manner, imo. I do like the black and white, however. ~mcmurma

musical instruments are so hard to do. this one looks quite old and i'm sure its really quite interesting...however, this doesn't come through well in the photo. in fact, i'm not at all sure what it is? a sitar? in any case, the lighting is quite harsh, and it would have been nice to see more of the subject matter. ~mcmurma

For anyone that wants to know how this is done, here goes: There is no real trick, it is simple enough, but you have to have a camera that can keep the shutter open for at least 10 or 15 seconds. This shot was 13 seconds long with no flash fill. With the shutter open I quickly stuck my hand on the knob, held it very still for about 3 seconds, then moved it quickly out. If you do this smoothly, and hold your hand still enough, it leaves a nice crisp outline in the finished photo.

it certainly looks old, but then i get no clear idea of what "it" is. showing more of the object, perhaps in relation to its usage, would have made it easier for thick-skulled reviewers like myself to figure it out. the lighting is dramatic and i like that, but you have lost some detail to highlights on the right, and shadows on the left. the green triangle upper right is a puzzle as well. ~mcmurma
