| 06/06/2007 11:26:51 PM | Marine Biology - So much we dont knowby nlghttrainComment: In regards to your thread - the first thing that comes to mind is the composition. The rule of thirds exists for a reason - it helps make a documentary type shot interesting. You're shot is perfectly centred, and closely cropped at the edges. Putting a bit of empty space on the right, in the direction its eyes are looking, may convey a bit more interest to the casual observer.
Also, what other said about slightly harsh lighting on the subject. You used a relatively slow shutter speed, so I imagine this was the best of several shots, but with a bit of curves or levels in photoshop, you could take a bit of the harsh light off the cuttlefish.
Hope this helps. PM if you have any questions
cheers

I hope this is understood by enough people to garner you a good score. Good luck! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/27/2007 11:35:10 PM | The Life Beyond the Tracksby Dirt_DiverComment: Uhm - wow, this doesn't really need a critique, but hello from the critique club!
This is an interesting picture. My first instinct is to say the curves before the vanishing point may have hurt you a touch. The point is distinct, clear, and obviously meet the challenge, yet the curves create a detour bump on the way.
Composition - I wonder if you had included the tops of the trees, so this way the point wouldn't be quite as centred.
The only other critique I could offer is that the sky seems a touch unnatural. I understand the DPC aesthetic loves beautiful, saturated colours, but on my monitor, the pinks are a bit too much.
This was an excellent picture that did well with voters - congratulations on a new personal best!

Well, first off, welcome to DPC, and congratulations on a very nice first entry!
First, I like this picture overall. The large bubble placed off center and the lighting are quite nice. I'm a bit confused with your aperture listing, but it looks as though there is an area in the top left that is not quite as sharp as the rest. this picture feels like it wants everything to be in focus for maximum impact. I don't know if you used a tripod, but you can use a tripod to stabilize the camera to close the aperture (maybe try and f/11 or something) so the top left will be as sharp as the rest of the picture.
In the big bubble, there is a bit of water or something, but it seems to be a bit ill defined. Again, I think a more close aperture will help that.
You have a lot of creativity and a good eye, and I look forward to seeing your future entries
Cheers

I am a sucker for the non fuzzy creatures on this planet, though I must confess I remember stomping on snails after it rained when I was a child.
First impression - it doesn't seem to meet the challenge. The main focal point, which to me is the head, is center. The antennae, because of the depth of field, seem more as accessories as opposed to the main point of the picture
The lighting is great, the warm light on the grass and backlighting is of great use in this picture. I think a touch of curves to lighten up the neck of the snail to enhance the textures would also help the picture a touch.
In general, this is a great picture, and you have some very nice stuff in your portfolio. Keep in mind that DPC voters tend to be literal in their interpretations of challenges.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers
