Not a lot in the background to support his environment really well, as there really isn't much to show what he does. Great use of the depth of field to isolate him from the background.

hmmm. OK, the boat is the subject of the portrait and is shown in it's environment. A bit out of the box, and certainly creative.

I think just a little tighter crop may have helped take a lot of the focal point off of his belly away, but then the glove would have been lost showing in the background.
