Regretfully, He'll Never Be Seven Again

Thanks to all who commented. Let me clear up a couple of things.

1) There is nothing by accident in this photo; 2) The subject is the couple standing, or rather the man standing in the couple; 3)The mother and kids were there to provide counter point to his emotion ... wonder vs. wistfulness; 4) I did slightly blur the background to force attention on the man. Interestingly, for a picture that didn't score that well I got a lot of comments that varied dramatically in their content. Regretable, even 640 x 640 is too small to really convey all the emotions of all 5 people which is the meta-subject if you will. If you look carefully and and thoughtfully, you can see them all. The mother's emotion is all about her kids. The kids' emotion is all about the wonder of the Christmas village. The man's emotion is about being 7 again but unable to tavel back in time. And woman's emotion is about impatience ... with the man and with time flying ... look closely at her face.

I'm not asking you to change your views about the photo but only to look carefully and thoughtfully at it.

And yes it's flawed in many ways which I'll learn from. Thanks.

It may be that you won't agree with me, but in my mind "candid" implies a photograph of a person at a candid (i.e. unaware of the camera) moment. So, to that way of thinking, this doesn't really meet the challenge. I suppose you're breaking new ground ... a candid photo of a landscape.

If you think of degree of difficulty, this is a pretty hard photo to get right. There are focus issues & lighting issues that come from the venue. It looks like you may not have used a tripod which would have helped. And in the end, I just don't get candid from this.

I hope this does well in the voting because it is a wonderful photo. Technically, I love the composition, focus, DOF, levels and the lighting (although the background portholes distract a little. But more than that, I really like the emotion you've captured (mostly in the face and eyes) of playing a game that's FUN! Very well done. Hope it ribbons.

I cannot fully explain why I like this so much. Partly it's the color I think. Partly it's about the action swirling around the fixed subject. Partly it's that it's perfectly titled. Just a very pleasing image. Thanks.

Simply outstanding! A few focus issues but not very noticable. Looks like a ribbon winner to me.

Very nice photo full of action. Absolutely terrific composition. Vibrant colors. Beautifully stopped motion. Really a very worthy effort. But without the feel of a candid photo of someone unaware of the camera.

This is such a great photo. though, that I'll assume it was taken with a really long lens and that the subject really wasn't aware. Great character in the face. Perfectly lit. Nicely framed. Very appealing in its white point / black point balance. Focus is dead on. In short a perfect photo ... except for the challenge theme thing.
