5 - My Favorite Daughterby BudComment: Am glad you cleared the title up Bud, all sorts of things went through my mind when I saw the thumb in the main thread.
Lovely capture of innocence (yeah right, mischief more like). For me the oof foreground (arm of chair?) is a little too much, I know your showing off with the 1.4 but am sure the 400D can handle 1600ISO and maybe stop down a little?

Seriously Soni, love the sp and that chair looks cool and Bud has it right, strong backlighting that doesn't over power, was this a thought for the 'framed' challenge? 2 niggles if I may? do you always read with walking boots on and not sure about the reflection on the carpet bottom right.
Am looking forward to the blinds opening and seeing the panoramic view that must be behind them ;) |

IMG_3781-01.jpgby beneeComment: Hey Ben, this is a relaxed side challenge so don't think you need to rush!
That said, I like the image, its soft, has movement though more black and grey than B&W on my monitor.
I do like to see exif/shot data when I comment as I glean tips and tricks from it ;)
so took the liberty of gleaning that info for others...
50mm @1.8, 1/500 with 400ISO

Broken Docksby HipychikComment: Hey Terry, don't worry, we won't ask for exif data if we like your shot ;)
As Bud said, it sure looks cold and barren there. The iced up water looks painterly (am sure thats a real word) and the foreground water leads you nicely into the image. There is a bit of haloing (is this a real word?) around the trees.
defo worthy of a nice big print :)

Spireby AliciaComment: ooh, Abstract and Surreal! if that is what you where after then it works, for me I think the sky should have been left alone.
oh, and after looking through your portfolio I am crowning you Queen of the Spires ;)

aloneby UrfaKComment: Excellent shot! In motion and makes this a great B&W image. Not the best setting in the world but you've made it into a bit of Art!
Now, I was just thinking what emotions/thoughts peeps would have if instead of a guy walking out of the shot there were a couple of hooded youths standing there? (would make quite a menacing image). |

Studio Entranceby GermaineComment: Just a little dark for me too but viewing at 45 degrees from normal I get to see much more of the image. Have you been dodging the shadows as I get a greyish cast on the tree and foliage when viewed from that angle.
Must be a great place to work and whilst your there how a bout a daylight shot so we can see just how nice it is ;)
btw, just saw this in your portfolio - WOW!

Week 4by muz64Comment: Great capture of 'the moment' I wonder what was being whispered in her ear?
Deb has done a nice edit below and you may want to try something similar and spend a little time bringing the bg back from being blown in the edit (though that works as well). If it were a staged image I might have more to critique but often a good candid should retain its flaws.
So, just play with the levels/RAW conversion or whatever to get a bit more oomph in the colours ;)
Oh, and I think she was being told something funny, her expression is great!
how about " Uncle Murray still has his lens cap on" |

Week 5by chris48083Comment: Nice B&W portrait! I'm a sucker for negative space and often overdo it myself. Whilst I understand the comment below it might still work if you had more negative space, begging the question "should someone else be sitting there?
Good use of light, the light area behind his head works really well and just that niggling little shadow around his neck. Always good to add a touch of humour in the shot and love the raised eyebrow :)

Sugarbeet Factoryby BAMartinComment: argh!!!! was late for work today cos the beet lorries closed my road for 15 minutes whilst loading.
Yup, the puddle sure helps the image with some foreground interest. I might have crouched down a little more to try and remove a little of the 'empty' middle ground? What pp'ing did you do? looks a little heavy on the shadow/highlight though it does give an interesting wash to the image.
Read a bit about it from your link in the main thread, plenty more stories to be told methinks ;) |
