Shadow Of A Doubt

Shadow Of A Doubt

Comment:
bit too psycheadelic possibly; and regrettably it does feel like it's been post-processed to within an inch of its life - would imagine it's too digital looking for a lot of voters. not sure it strictly fits the challenge; i see there's shadows, but they could just as easily be black question marks. it's certainly creative and original (and brave, here), and merit should be awarded for that. i keep thinking with some polishing, and maybe a squarer crop, it would make a good record sleeve. 5.

this is a very pleasing example of geometry and light, which should also please the majority of voters one would imagine. it feels quite arty, and i love the brightness of the white and the depth of the blue. very nice, 8.

this is one of my favourite three of the challenge. the set-up is excuisitely cool and pays suitable homage to the film genre. shadow is very much an inegral part of this picture, and it's feeling. it's beautifully mooded, massievly enhanced by the tones of sepia you have used. lighting is brilliant. very easy ten, and certainly a ribbon contender. you rock.

Comment:
i seriously hope that this is upside down, and it's just a bloke on a trampoline ,or even jumping... but the illusion works (style of the windows etc) so has been brilliantly executed. either that r the picture is the right way up, and the bloke has just been brilliantly executed. it's a really fun and creative shot that meets the challenge splendidly well. 9.

Petals Cast Shadows

Petals Cast Shadows
by Dave Gordon

Comment:
if you had cropped the picture more tightly to put the onus on the shapes cast by the petals shadow and the different tones of yellow because of the shadows and light, then i think it might appear to fit the challenge description better. unfortunately, for me, it seems the shadow is purely a chance by-product of a (an admittedly well-taken) shot of a flower, and not so much a prominent element. also, i would suggest possibly scooting down a little more so your head is level with the flower; but that's more personal preference and not a knock on your shot... it is still very pretty, the colours are rich and bright, and the detail reasonably sharp... piture gets 8, meeting challenge gets 4, so an average of 6.

A barrel of fun

A barrel of fun

Comment:
not having a toxic nuclear waste sign on the barrel feels like a slightly missed opportunity, but i still think this is a fun amusing image, and it actually conveys a sort of infectuous fun feeling too. technically, i think the shot looks a little over cluttered, but i do like how clearly defined the shadows are, and the tones and colours are very pleasing also. 7.

i fear that you are SO going to get condemned for your selective blur and out-of-focus treatment. i personally adore this style - i've tried it myself with not remotely the level of success you did here. i hope i'm wrong and people who are voting warm to the atmospheric and stylisctic approach you've taken. the only thing not getting this a ten is something i can't quite place about the composition; perhaps it's the amount of wall on the right? might be talking out of my arse, but i wonder if a wide-angled landscape shot might make it fit a bit more comfy? or even show less of the room altogether (i put my hand over the right third, and it seems a bit more balanced). anyway, splendid job anyway. 9.

not totally enthused with the title (lacks a certain subtlety!) but the image itself is wonderfully composed and expertly presented. you've given a bona fide excuse for selective desat, which i feel is more often than not used totally wrongly. it works GLORiously here. every detail / element is perfectly positioned and treated - the light from the door, the door, the way the hanger appears to be floating. it gives the impression that you took a lot of care and attention to get this shot just so. easily one of my favourites this week. 10.

this has a lot of promise; one wonders how it might have looked if you had taken one or two lightbulbs out from the background. i think the brightness and shock value of the blue ball might have had greater impact. i like how you positioned the ball, and the idea of space is pleasing. overall the shot seems a tad too bright to me, but very likeable. 8. by the way; if this is your basement, i'm very jealous - seems like a wonderful place for shooting.
