Shot a good friend of mine who patiently endured my cosmetic 'vision'. Wanted to go for that typical 40s film noir look, and think I succeeded pretty well.

Hardly any post-processing.

==============================
Wow, thanks everyone for regarding me so high. I never expected it to do so well. I had this image in mind quite late in the challenge, but when I did, it more or less resembled this shot from the start. Did some shopping in the local prop shop to come up with the typewriter and telephone (at the very bottom of the photo) and razed my parents house for the other paraphernalia.
Only after finishing the shoot I realised that I had a shot that would do very well on DPC. After the first few votes I almost hoped for a ribbon, at one point my score was somewhere aroun 7.5! Still, 6th place for a 4th submission is nothing to sneer about! :)

---Greetings from the Critique Club!---

First impressions - Really cool shot!

Meets the challenge - very very well.

I really like the fact that the shadows are not the subject, but the picture would not be as strong without them. The other strong aspect of this shot is the attention to detail. You have that '40s look in every thing from the typewriter to the clothes. The cigar and liquor are nice touches too. Personally. I voted this image higher than any image above it. It might have lost a vote or 2 on the fact that the shadow is not the subject. Some voters may have been strict on that.

The composition is flawless. The eye moves across the entire image allowing the viewer to take in all the detail.

Any score 7+ is rare. You should be very proud.

If there is a negative in my mind it is the wide border. I like borders, but less is more IMO. I would not have taken off for it.

It's hard to find fault with such a strong entry. I hope this was helpful anyway.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

David

Wonderful exploration of the the effect of light, and specifically shadow, on mood. And the mood is unmistakeably Philip Marlowe. A less obvious but still important contributor to the image's success is the fact that several elements are slightly unresolved ... the part-cropped lamp, the dark object encroaching on the top right hand corner, the odd shape at the near edge of the desk, and the irregular little spills of sunlight beneath Marlowe's chair ... all add to the mood of edginess and tension. Terrific props, perfectly deployed (the proof is that they don't look like props at all). 10.

Looks very old fashion, which I like a lot.. Nice to choose bw for this one, like the fact that this is a picture of "something" and it INCLUDES shadows...

this is one of my favourite three of the challenge. the set-up is excuisitely cool and pays suitable homage to the film genre. shadow is very much an inegral part of this picture, and it's feeling. it's beautifully mooded, massievly enhanced by the tones of sepia you have used. lighting is brilliant. very easy ten, and certainly a ribbon contender. you rock.

Really good. Love the old Underwood typewriter. Or is it a Royal? Perfect title. I saw it and immediately thought of Guy Noir, the PI on Prairie Home Companion.

Great post editing. Bumping up. This is the best of the challenge. 10

Noir et plein de charme...
Like a scene from a detective movie of the 50's , I love how you have recreated the atmosphere , the face hidden by the shadows only adds more mystery.
