Braided bread and Stilton cheeseby
snafflesComment: *Greetings from the Critique Club*
Compositionally this image works for me. I like that the bread and cheese are such a large part of the frame, and I love that one piece of bread with cheese on it. There was nothing I found distracting or out-of place in your scene.
Technically, I like that I feel a bit of depth to the light, and the darkness around the edges helped the bread and cheese stand out. Overall the scene seems a bit dark to me, but admittedly I tend to lean towards high key over low key, so it's just a personal preference thing.
I will say that the longer I considered this image, the more I liked it. I found the cut pieces of bread and the cheese looking good enough to eat, but the braided bread, seemed to be missing something - although I'll be darned if I'm figuring out what words to use to describe what might be lacking. It might just be the light. There are two spots, one on each of the darkest pieces of the bread, where the shadow is just really dark. I wonder if a bit more light in those areas might have made any difference? I also zoomed in with my screen to see what a tighter view might have looked like, and maybe a crop with mainly those cut pieces of bread and the cheese in your frame might have made a stronger entry? (With that lovely texture showing up even more strongly and then areas of your image where the light was really nice would have been highlighted?)
Your image certainly met the challenge. The only real difference I observe between your shot and those on the front page is the light. Other than that I think you had a nice shot.
