Surfboat, Old Harbor Life-Saving Station, circa 1902by PenelopeKComment: Originally posted by blindjustice: The processing is subtle and fine. I especially like the door and the window, the lines giving movement to the boat. |
Thanks Paul. Those were definitively key elements that drew me to this, plus the light on the oars.
Regarding the crop. Thanks for the feedback from those who commented on it. I was at the wide end of this lens and I couldn't stand any further back. I was up against a locked door. I could have switched to the 10-22mm lens but I really wanted the benefit of the L glass in my 24-105mm lens plus the area around the bottom of the boat was marred (IMO) by metal supports and other objects. Once home, I considered cropping more off the bottom to get away from the look of having "just" missed getting all the boat in the image, but to my eyes that just wasn't as interesting. Ansel of Arabia by ecmguyComment: Just wonderful. I love sand and shadow images and Cape Cod can be a pretty cool place to take them at certain times of year, but the sheer scale of this and the sweeping wind swept lines is in another class altogether. Congrats on the wonderful score and the well deserved blue ribbon. |

The Shepherd by HighNoonerComment: An interesting scene with the mixture of animals. I find the light rather flat uniform (as others said it's more harsh than flat, I was using that term to mean without much variation, and that is not correct usage) and the image lacking the balance of tonal values that Ansel Adams was known for. But a good subject choice for a Black and White image. I like this more coming back a second time and have bumped it. Message edited by author 2012-05-29 13:18:32. |

The Farm on Capehart Roadby namComment: An interesting scene but the image appears almost like an etching and looks over-sharpened. The shapes of the buildings is its strongest point, a closer view of them might have made for a stronger image, but that is just my opinion. |

Carribean Coastby mlianoprComment: Interesting looking fortification and tree, but IMO the processing is not strongly in the Ansel Adams style (apart from being in B&W) and the details lack clarity. |

Möweby chanserComment: Unfortunately the light in this image is quite flat. On my monitor there are no details in the dark areas, and both the mid-tones and lightest areas are rather dull looking. Not what I would expect to see in an Ansel Adams' photo IMO. There is something very majestic about the way this gull is standing though. |
