I'm torn between liking the tree as a frame, and wishing it wasn't there, because I really like the shapes and the shades of the mountains in the background.

I think you covered the tones very well. For this scene the image is composed very well. I like the argument with the tree - it works well and its lines are echoed in the fields and the mountains. very well seen. 7

The road and fence provide good leading lines into the fine landscape. The shot angle to the sun is acute. The dynamic range of the scene is such that detail will be lost in the shadows, as many objects will go to silhouette. Detail lost in the bright sky also. That high contrast can be effective, as it is with your foreground tree, but might have been anathema to AA. Your tonal range is very wide.
