Wake up before you go through... If you can...

Why the author would pick a very competant and beautiful black and white conversion rich in detail and a great demonstration of zone control as nightmare material is quite puzzling. If the image were foggy or vague in some way, perhaps. Point to the author for creating a great image - this reviewer doesn't care that it isn't particularly frighting or forbidding.

Not particularly frightening, it is a great macro image. If the scale were a little bigger, it would certainly qualify as the stuff nightmares are made of.

Well, it certainly is fearsome being dark and forbidding. Not particularly nightmare material, it is a very intriguing image.

Without ever seeing the movie, it would be hard to comment on how this reflects as a "nightmare". As a straight image, it's a good one with the right on the edge whites and somewhat vauge headlight area. A very compelling image.

Not so much a nightmare as it is laugh out loud funny. A great image and not so scary or nightmarish. It would appear that the horse is having a bit of fun with the author. A great image.

A sixth viewing and a final decision is that this is more of a terrific macro shot rather than a "creative" use of lighting. Having said that, a synonym for "creative" is inspired and this is certainly an inspired image well lit for effect. Benefit of doubt to the author - well done.

A fifth view and benefit of doubt to the author. A spectacular image creatively lighted by direct soft light. A good how to highlight certain areas without negatively affecting other areas creating a other worldly impression. Very artistic and technically perfect. Well done.

A common theme at DPC is the offset subject and frankly, it's becoming so common that the treatment is unremarkable and fast becoming an also ran in terms of creativity and very cliche'. Fortunately in this case, the lightly figured background helps and the use of lighting is effective even with the minor little light bloom on the left edge of the leaf. A good example proper lighting revealing rich detail to good effect.

Even after multiple views, it's sometimes hard to define the author's intent. In those cases, it's often best to just give the benefit of the doubt to the author and just let an opinion fly. This is a great image in particular with the intentional (unintentional?) starfield which technically is a source of night light not ordinarily seen in areas that are light polluted. Simple and direct. Ah heck with it - well done.

into the light

Comment:
The author's intent was clear and the use of light is creative, unfortunately the overall impression is of unnatural light which washes out the entire image and creates a negative impact. It might have been better if the author didn't attempt to be artsy, but create a direct shot from the back of the bride into the light with a lower aperature setting to create a halo effect without the odd and uncomfortable angle. A good effort and a demonstration of direct lighting, just a little over the top trying to create an "art" image.
