A moment frozen in time. Technically competant, the lack of motion leaves a static impression that, while not negative, isn't positive either - it would help to have some movement to express the idea - this image gives an impression of being a "trick" image rather than a natural physical action/reaction. A good solid entry into the challenge.

Lemange? Oramon? Pretty clever as it's very indeterminate. A good eye for something different properly presented from both a technical and artistic standpoint. Well done.

The table reflection shot seems to be a theme in this challenge. In this case, it works as an image if there were less reflection from the table surface. In order to be truly technically effective, there has to be a little more definition to the reflection than is exhibited here. The rest of the image is a technical success as it's crisp, sharp and has something interesting to look at. That being said, it's artistic impression is positive having pleasing colors and textures in addition to a rather interesting critter to look at. A very worthy entry into the challenge.

Another interesting image - cats are always fun to photograph as they exhibit a lot of curiosity when confronted with something new or different. An image in which one might view negatively because of the DOF on the cat, but it can also be viewed as a positive as it does give the image some depth. This may have been a much better color image given the nature of the cat - the reflection shows off some different tonal quality on the cat's face that may have worked better in color. A different look might have been to take a more open aperature look to enhance the cat's quality of concentration. Still a good effort that falls just shy of being really effective in a technical and artistic sense.

There are two ways to look at this image - one, it has a lot of blank space which could be viewed as a negative. Or one could view the rather large space as a positive controlling the core subject by bringing the eye to the object instead of away from it. In either case, this works fine as it is, although the offset to the left could be a little less strong to eliminate the sense of space while keeping the same image size. The image is technically successful without any significant issues - properly focused showing rich detail complimented by the reflection on the surface. As a stand alone art print, it also works as the soft reflected light addresses the need for depth and dimension. Well done - this would work very well as a photo-on-canvass print.

A different look at the challenge subject, this still life is very reminiscent of the late 19th, early 20th century Russian genre of art called Constructionism. The primary element of this school of thought was the concept of Faktura - referring to the material aspect of the surface each part exhibiting its own distinctiveness and unique nature. Clearly, this image reflects that concept and shows it in it's most positive light. The rich textures and colors of the satin are complimentary of the foreground objects in every way. A success from a technical standpoint with one minor issue not worth mentioning as it takes a while to see it. Artistically, the author showed evidence of having patience in setting the image up and properly using light and shadow to it's best effect. While it may not suit the general taste, this should properly be placed as a ribbon winner for it's concept and execution in addition to it's overall artistic impact. Well done.

This rather dark image invokes a sense of noir mystery - a set piece scene where the murderer is either about to be revealed or another attempt is going to be made. A very good conversion, it has all the elements of proper zone system use for effect. The china is particularly interesting and detailed. A technical success with good artistic impact.

Rich and detailed, in addition to being one of this reviewer's favorite movies, a very good look at home movie night. Nothing seems out of place and it's a very comfortable image to look at being a very common place event. A technical success, it also invokes a certain level of visual interest from an artistic standpoint - this could serve well as a stock shot for a home movie advertisement.

An uncomfortable type of image of a result that could happen to anyone at anytime. The unkown is always different and in some ways, this is a sad and somewhat depresssing image. Not your everyday image for a challenge like this, it does make sense. One can only hope that identification is made and proper respect made. An excellant conversion to black and white. It might have been a better choice to keep everything in focus, but this does work as it is.

Comment:
Everything in this image is excellant. The monotone color is complimentary to the mood and the image is so crisp and sharp that it appears to be 3D and very life like. The single background subject in comtemplation of another image is a terrific artistic touch. Everything in this image is properly controlled and presented - a demonstration of an author taking the time to compose and execute the perfect mood with a sense of time and space. Very well done - this should place well into the top ten if not a ribbon winner.
