I also have trouble knowing where to crop but IMO you've done this perfectly. I like how you see most of the flower behind the center flower. You've also got nice shadows falling on the flowers below the center flower.

Pretty, I can understand why people are distracted by the border ... I like the creativity to get a border like that. I think maybe the color is the distraction, perhaps if it was a bit darker it would be less distracting.
But ... experimentation is the fun part (for me) and I'm glad you experimented ... neat effect.

Roses and waterdrops seem to go together very well. I wonder if using a polarizer lens would help with this - there seems to be a lot of brightness that could be saturated and toned down with it. Polarizers do wonders for wet environments!
