I... ummm... I'm not fond of the DOF. I think something needs to be in focus, even if it's 'soft focus'. But, don't take my opinion as the law. :)

If you are going to produce a landscape then absolutely everything from the first pebble at your feet to the last tree on the horizon needs to be in focus. In this image we don't get sharp until 6/8 feet from the foreground, and thats a shame. Use f22 and focus on something 3 feet out, that way the hyperfocal point will ensure you have the maximum depth of field.

This image has a strong foreground element but you waste it by making it out of focus. It then needs something in the distance to lead the eye to.
