Oh no......I bet this image is going to be way too subtle for speed voters. Brillaint use of shadows for the 'city skyline'

Just an exceptional idea which has been wonderfully executed 9

I like the play of the shadows on the wall, similar to the skyline of a city.

Lol. Very creative! Bonus points for making it funny but keeping the feel of the challenge.

Yep, probably the most hidden parts of our cities and for good reason. Well captured.

This strikes me as a test image to see how the lensbaby works, as opposed to a planned, competition-level image. When we were doing the blur side challenge, a regular question was "why blur?" Having such a small area in focus certainly drives my eye to the sharp part, but once there, I find nothing to hold my interest. Now, if there had been someone in the window, or something falling to the ground, or a shaft of light, or a color, or something, that would've been different.

When the "I Bought it on eBay" challenge ends tomorrow night, look at my image. It has some similarities, but also some differenecs, so and see why you think the score is so much higher. Like your shot, some commenters have said they don't like the selective focus, but I have more who like where I drew their attention.

I think you did a nice job with this - I voted it a 7. I like the lighting and how the guy seems exhausted from reading. As for non-vertical verticals, the main effect to me is to make it look more ominous, as the bookshelf seems to be about to fall over on him. Only you can decide if you like that or not.

I think that, instead of stopping down to get the front apple in focus, I'd suggest dropping it out of the picture. Go for as many contrasts as possible: apple/orange, green/orange, near/far, sharp/blurred, AND one/many. If you decide to retry it, I suggest also moving to a lower angle so the close apple towers over the distant oranges. Also, try spraying some water on the apple (can't tell you why, but it usually adds interest), and make the apple brighter than the oranges.
