In addition to entering a shot that meets the challenge better, you might look at this tutorial to prepare your entry for the challenge. Most voters will vote lower on entries that are less than 640 pixels on the longest side.

A good idea. I would personally like to have seen 1/3 of the left hand side of the photo cropped out and a tighter crop on the 2/3 on the right. Then a bit more colour contrast added.

Good idea and nice use of lines and shapes. But to me it's cropped way too tight and the orange and green colors are out of place in the image. Still, not bad, but it could have been better.
