I just saw this and can't believe it got the score it did, imo it should have fared at least in the sixes. I love the b&w treatment on this shot, it really enhances the feel and emotion of the shot. Composition is nice and the focus is perfect with the background fading to smooth bokeh. I think a slight vignette on the edges might have helped a bit and a slight burning of the log to tone it down as it draws a bit of attention. All around a nice really cool shot that you should be proud of, congrats.

First, congratulations on some solid technicals. Focus/sharpening, DOF, composition, and decision to go black and white are spot-on. With regard to the emotive aspect, this shot does tell a story to me and it makes me sad a little bit. The animal looks abandoned and unloved and all alone, and he doesn't even have a nice comfy spot to hang around in. It's the debris in the right side of the background that really adds to the scene. Excellent work here!
