The effect looks cool at first, but when I look closer at the part that's sharp, the transition seems a little off. Maybe smoothing out the gradient a little would help?

Very good at masking out the distracting garbage. I do the same thing. I think that your image was fairly well composed, and I know you tried to slow down the water by using a slower shutter. It did cause the water to be overexposed. I finally got a neutral density filter for my camera, and now I can get those soft water shots without any exposure problems. If you can't attach a screw in variety, sometimes just getting one and holding it in front of the camera lens is all you need to do. Another trick on getting macros with a point and shoot is buying a magnifying glass and using it on the subject you are trying to get. That works pretty well too.
