Greetings from the Critique Club

Composition - Really a quite beautiful shot. Great colors. Probably would've been slightly more successful if you took it a few minutes earlier. I think that people were a little too hard on the yellow part of this challenge and looked at that more than they did the quality of the photos. If it's sort of yellow, that's good enough for me. I think that a tighter cropped would've really worked for you to concentrate a lot more on the mountain in what is the center here. I'd have cut out quite a bit of the bottom, a little of the top and about 15% of the left side to really bring the mountain part and the color to the forefront. The dark clouds on the left side LOOK blurry, but how could they be? But they aren't contributing positively to this picture. That's about all I'd suggest in terms of composition.

Photography - It must've been actually pretty light out when you took this judging by the fast shutter speed and high F number. The 200 ISO is a little peculiar too. I'd think you'd get better color representation at 100 or less. Who am I to say though? It turned out well.

Processing - I think cropping it tighter would've made a big difference. If the people want yellow, give them yellow!! Seriously, I would've "juiced" the yellow hues a bit to make them a bit brighter, but no serious changes. Its very good.

Overall - This is a very underrated photo. I can see the viewers need for lemon yellow to a point, but this qualifies in my book. I think this is a very good photo that needs a little adjustment to make it more challenge worthy, but as just a photo, NEEDS little adjustment to make it as good as it could be. Nice shot Jeremy!! - Bob

Since it won the competition, and not undeservedly, I can't say much negative. Every thing positive has already been said. Sorry I can't offer much more in the way of an in depth critique!

This is a pretty shot. It might have been neat to capture more of that water that is reflecting that gorgeous sky.

Should have cropped that reflection at the bottom out. IMHO.

Initial thoughts
Great eye contact and wonderful textures and colours.

Composition/ Content
I really like the angles of the lines of coloured scales, the snake̢۪s mouth and the lower coil of his body within the frame. I like that we are slightly sideways on to his face but not overly so.
Colour-wise I love the limited brown, beige, cream and orangey colour palette.
I am in two minds about the DOF choice – I love that the background is out of focus while the eye is so wonderfully sharp but I am not sure about the nose/ tip of his face being out of focus.
In terms of focal point my eye is torn between the clearly focussed eye and the fuzzy area that is the nose.
I guess the only way to know for sure would be to see both choices – did you happen to take it with more DOF too by any chance?

Background
Perfectly out of focus and the orangey colour is just right.

Camera Work - Technical
Wondefully sharp. Very well captured.

Digital Processing - Technical
Great crop (if this isn̢۪t the shot straight out of the camera) and no artifacts visible (on my monitor anyway).

Fits The Challenge
Definitely.

My Opinion On The Photo
Compelling.

Questions
Did you take it through glass? It doesn̢۪t seem so.

beautiful sunset. I like the silhouetted mountain. the angle and framing/cropping are great. color is very nice. i think it's divided just nicely with the horizon and the mountains. the dark clouds on the top create a nice balance. a nice shot. good luck in the challenge.

I really like the color of the pipes and how they contrast against the golden framing. This show might have benefited if you would have cropped in to the shot just a bit more. Overall, very nice.
