Prickly Pearby BalkoComment by MelonMusketeer: We have prickly pear here in Florida too. They seem to grow best where the soil is sandy and too dry for anything else. The low angle to get the sky behind the cacti helps to isolate the subject in this shot. Their blooms are very pretty too, but this one is past that stage. The local Latinos
eat the flat "leaves". One of the places that I work was working on a thorn-less variety to try to market.
The biggest and thorniest ones that I have ever seen were on an isolated island in the Bahamas. |

Ristras in Old Townby BalkoComment by cgino: A familiar site, hanging chilis! Wonderful textures you've brought out here. Ya know, in my seven years here I've only been to Old Town once...I don't get out much :-) Maybe we should meet up some time! |

Prickly Pearby BalkoComment by bob350: The red of the prickly pears works well with the depth of blue in the sky. It is nice to see intact fruit. On hikes, the deer or other critters seem to take bites before the fruit can get so big. |

Prickly Pearby BalkoComment by Lutchenko: For me this has a real holiday feeling as we only get to see this type of flora when we travel abroad. |
