Nice series. Hope you put these on your own web site so that in the event that one day you leave DPC I can still find them...

My happiest times were riding steam trains through Communist China in the earliest 80s. You remind me. Not so sad as you(th) might think :)

Heh - yeah, now that you mention it, it probably is a bit further back. Almost seems like soldiers got a bit bored and that this was a minor project, not something official.

No, i think it was painted way earlier than that, perhaps in the 60's or 70's. The base was cleared between '91 and '93, so that's two to four years after the reunion of socialist and kapitalistic Germany. As soon as the CSSR went down the russians knew that they were to leave (former) East Germany and return to Russia within the next few years, so what's the point of making the last years of their stay on the base more enjoyable by painting images of the "glorious" sovjet times? The russians didn't give a damn what would happen to the base after they had left, and the newly formed BRD didn't find use of the MANY bases that were now empty, and on the other hand probably neither had the fonds to rebuilt the base nor to demolish and renaturate it...Which of course is good otherwise i would not have the opportunity to explore these VERY interesting remnants of a 40 years lasting era of German history. :)

I am surprised you managed to climb up there given that there probably is a bit of security out there. That, and it looks a bit crumbly and not especially sturdy!
