I like the light-to-dark contrast in the water surface as the photo is viewed from top to bottom.

Comment by Bud:
Very cool photo and nice shadows on the dock. The only thing this lacks for a 10 is a stronger emphasis of the challenge theme, the ripples are a bit subtle. 9.

Composition: 5, there's nothing really wrong here, but shooting straight on from eye level doesn't make it that interesting
Technical: 7, nothing really off here. it's just too bad the colors don't really stand out more
Appeal: 5, this doesn't really move me one way or another
Challenge: 5, i'll have to take your word for it that this is broken. your image conveys more of a sense of old than broken (actually, from the look of the bin, it looks like it is still in use...)
Overall Calculated Average Score: 6

This is one shot where selective desaturation really feels like cheating to my mind. Without it, your subject would presumably have merged into the background so much more, and separating it by use of a processing technique (read 'trick') feels like laziness to me. Also this is a very straightforward documentary shot - it tells me very little, asks me to find my own interest in the object, rather than showing me yours. It's taken from head high, it neatly includes all of the subject, and doesn't communicate anything of your feelings, likes, dislikes, interests in this subject, and it isn't such a very unfamiliar type of thing that it's simple presence is going to have impact of itself.

More old and rusted that broken. Great composition though. 6

Nice shot. The fact that it's loaded up with stuff detracts from the impression that it might be broken, however.
