I do not photograph homeless people (or beggars) unless they see my camera and ask to be photographed. A rare thing. Most of them are beyond words and I feel primarily to help them somehow than photograph them. In the end, the truth is that I do neither of these two choices - most of homeless people in NYC are hard to approach and we are asked to help them through organized charity. Am not sure I fully appreciate Diane Arbus obsessive search. But your Johnny is (was) a different character

This was a candid. But after I took this shot I waited until he noticed me, asked for a permission (which was granted) and took a more "proper" portrait of him. He had a striking face.
