Angel Smileby NinjaMomComment by Arcanist: Is this candid or staged? I can see how it could be candid. There is a good use of DOF here to get rid of background distractions, however it seems lightly too much. Her hair and right ear (left side) seem out of focus and this should be avoided. Portraits can have soft focus, but an emotive candid should completely highlight the subject. Lighting is harsh and uneven, blown out on the cheek all the way to the forehead and in the hair adornments. This seriously hurts the capture.
If your camera is equipped, two settings can help get these shots right everytime. A=Aperture Mode and S=Shutter Mode. A will allow you to pre-set the depth of field to a 7.1-10, to ensure enough depth to get the whole subject, whereas shutter mode will help you to force the camera to choose a DOF that ensures solid exposure.
Hope these ideas help. For this entry I offer a 3. |

Angel Smileby NinjaMomComment by shoyles: Good candid shot. I like the texture of the hair and the expression. However, you lost a point or two due to the red color cast and soft focus. |

Wind and Rainby NinjaMomComment by snackwells: Hi Danetta. I'm sure we'll be seeing great things to come, given that you have a fantastic tool in that 10D and what I can see from your portfolio. Good luck. :) |

Wind and Rainby NinjaMomComment by NinjaMom: Thanks to those who had something constructive to say. I entered this photo purely because it was taken in the right time frame. I really don't care for this picture at all... I was just getting acquainted with how a challenge works on this site.
And for the record... The wind is blowing through the water. :) Hence the "lack of focus". Message edited by author 2004-12-22 14:48:23. |

Wind and Rainby NinjaMomComment by rmtm333: The image appears to be out of focus and you need to take full advantage of the file and pixel size in order to appeal to this group...Good Luck |
