As one of your 15 highest votes, I saw this as an interesting portrait that captures character and sets a mood, but I also thought the darker face shadows hide detail that would have been good to have.

No comment from me during voting partly because I am a newcomer and was still trying to calibrate myself in voting (being clear internally about why I think what I think makes it easier to be constructive). As the recipient of some helpful comments already, I appreciate how useful they can be.

I think it is a good overall shot. It is composed well and it has good emotions to it. My problem with this shot is that it is soft. I think if his face was a little sharper it would help. He has great "life lines" on his face and I think sharpening would bring them out. I also would have brightened it out a little bit. I know you where going for the darker look(at least I think you where) but the harsh shadows take away from the details of his face. I want to see more of him. It seems like the light is on the hat and not on his face. Even though the hat is nice I would rather see more of his face.

I think that this shot suffered onaccounta 2 things ... one, it's not the tack sharp image that DPC'ers crave ... and two, it's quite dark ... not very much detail in his jacket or the background (which may have been the look you were going for) ... but playing with curves/levels may have helped you bring out some more details ... I think that the subject is very interesting and the composition is strong ...

What great detail!! Love this in black and white. You lighting is very good as is your composition. The dark background against the dark hair of the model and her coat helps to bring out the facial features. The only thing that I did notice is that is isn't perfectly centered. They always say you aren't supposed to produce a bullseye, but in this case it works. Your crop has just a bit more space to the right of the model than the left and you can see this because of the white piping on the model's collar. It's ever so slight. :) I like the border choice as well. It ties in with her ....tie. :P Very clean, very pretty picture! Well done!
