Indifferent Societyby ke2211975Comment by snaffles: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Excellent use of shallow dof, the white bg really offsets the man and his plight all the more. Very nice b/w even if the white is a tad bleached.
Very poignant image; what most of the commenters have already said is all I can echo. The sad state of society today, where is looks like the man has only his letteboard to communicate with. His left hand seems to show a state of palsy. Yet the expression on his face is one of stoicism and strength too. He's made it this long; a little longer won't kill him. But us showing him even the most basic human kindness might kill us.
Excellent work, keep it up!

What are you doing?!by ke2211975Comment by snaffles: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Cute dog, the framing is there, but the exposure is quite high so the dog's right ear is very blown out, meaning it's almost all a flat white because there is too much light. If you were shooting with a prime lens of 2.8 it may have been best to stop down to f.4 or f.5.6 as it looks like this was taken when the sun was high in the sky, not prime shooting conditions. Or at least soot faster; 1/500 or 1/640 could have made all the difference. Also dog's paw closest to the camera is chopped off, I always like to see the whole foot as opposed to just a partial one.
Overall not a bad image, just pay more attention to your settings.

Very creepy! Well done on that, Kevin.
I think that the overall darkness of the image is what caused the voters to vote lower and even some to not vote on it at all.
I've learned that DPC voters sometimes just look at the thumbnails of the images and decide which are interesting to them to click on. Unfortunately, this thumbnail image is very dark and drab and uninviting.
Also, not every voter has their monitor calibrated, so some may see even less detail. Perhaps a bit of "curves" to increase the contrast between lights and darks would have helped.
I usually finish my edit and then look at it on the website on my cellphone to make sure both look good.
Your composition is really good, I love what you've chosen to include in the scene to tell a story with your image.

But just painting some glowing eyes for example, would have made this picture already more "Expert" and perhaps would have given you higher scores - don't know how other voters weigh the editing rule in a challenge. |
