110 Hz by Nowhere_ManComment by Nowhere_Man: Thanks General! I want to understand better what you are saying here - what advantage would plucking a harmonic have over plucking the open string? Is that to get me back to 110Hz so I'm no longer "lying" about the 110Hz frequency I captured? |

110 Hz by Nowhere_ManComment by GeneralE: You've done a much better job than I've been able to get when trying to capture guitar string vibration -- thanks for posting your settings and set-up. :-)
Congratulations on the ribbon!

Try plucking while dampening the string at one of the main harmonic-points as if tuning the guitar -- 1/4 of the length from the bridge (or nut). The note there should be two-octaves higher ... probably not as nice a composition though as you probably can't also center the sound hole. Message edited by author 2024-01-09 13:16:03. |

110 Hz by Nowhere_ManComment by roz: Originally posted by Nowhere_Man: Thanks to everyone for their votes and especially your comments! I have been away a long time and it is great to be back.
HUETH, Lydia: I will admit a dirty secret or two- I struggled to get the vibration effect "strong" enough. The secrets were: don't use flash as the primary light source, and the biggie: loosen up the string quite a lot. Even then I took multiple shots to get this one. I kinda wish the sharp, frozen part of the string would have been in the middle of the vibrating part of the string.
roz: yes, the vibrating string is technically supposed to be vibrating at 110hz if using standard tuning. (note: since I loosened my string, the title is technically a big ol' LIE!)
kasaba: congrats on YOUR ribbon, great image and an inspiration to me for future submissions. The only reason the lighting for my shot was that complicated was that I was trying to keep light from spilling into the sound hole- there's a paper label inside there that I didn't want to be visible. |
thanks for explaining the setup etc .. very technical and what a great result ..
many congrats on your ribbon .. :) |
