I think it works well for this image. The muted colors give it a hand-tinted color and feel that makes it look like it could have been taken any time in the last 50 years.

Composition, lighting, and exposure are obviously good in this case, unfortunately, one of the major point that make a good flower shot is the color.

Centred composition and lack of interest makes this a bit dull - despite the impending event of blooming. The light areas in bg are distracting and push forward in the shot.

I just wanted to say thanks to those who took the time to comment and vote on my entry. After reading some of your comments I thought I'd post my first idea for this challenge, tighter crop and complete desaturation of color (except the eyes). It just seemed a little stark and not quite as crisp as my actual entry. Thanks again everyone!

Powerful image. One eye looks lazy though. I like that the color isn't over saturated like some of the others in this challenge (including my own).
