| 07/20/2012 01:02:04 PM | Another Great Cake by "It's All About The Cake" - Dana Point, CAby seethroughmylensComment by shair: The cake is very cool, but the photograph could do a lot more to capture its awesomeness. There are great colors to work with, the overall balance is great, but the image is not nearly as interesting as the cake itself. THe background is far too busy and doesn't add to the image. The angle is very static and stable, not fun or whimsical like the cake is trying to convey. The cake itself if very well designed and executed, so the photograph would do much better using the same design concepts. |

Overall nice colors, only thing I would suggest is possibly moving cake about 1'-2' from wall and get a little more bokeh if possible, unfortunately the top 1/3 of the cake to me gets lost in the brickwork somewhat, or shoot against a solid background if possible. Other than that nice shot of a cool cake. |

I'm torn between "what are you trying to do here" and "what do I expect here". Further complicating matters is the question "what would I do here".
What I would expect would be a technically strong piece of eye-candy that would present the dessert in a way that I would want to at least sample it, if not order it. Along these lines I'm looking at technicals: backgrounds, distracting elements, exposure, sharpness. I'm also looking for creativity, imagination, and originality, which can make up for less than perfect technicals.
So, where does this leave me with your image?
Nice take on the challenge. I would encourage you to explore multiple perspectives with subjects such as this, in order to satisfy yourself that you have found the most dynamic and interesting presentation possible. |

Technically, it's sharp-ish, but it seems that the best focus in the image is on the dell logo on the motherboard. The story lacks, the composition is not great at all... *shrug* Good try, but you're gonna need to put more thought into composition and execution.
Personally, I would have loved to have just seen a nice macro detail shot of that beautiful card and heatsink. |
