Voted earlier coming back to comment.

I have watched enough of the Food Channel to recognize that their are bakers who can do absolutely amazing things with cake and fondant:-) To me, this is an shining example of the creativity that can be baked up. Love the summer beach feel of the sand buckets - they are colorful, fun and cheerful. Now that said the backdrop does absolutely nothing to complement the beautiful cake. The brick backdrop conflicts with the imagery of the beach that the cake is projecting. I realize that there is a possiblity that this was taken at a tournament in which cakes were on display so that you had absolutely no control on the environs. However, making a beautiful cake is just part of what makes a dessert visually appealing in a photo challenge. Your audience cannot physically taste the cake so we have to rely on it's looks and by *how* you present it. Had the backdrop been something that alluded to the beach or summer it would have complemented the cake far better.

Oh boy, I just made the mistake of checking out the website for the bakery since you gave the name in the title. The photo on the page for the Mini Desserts and the photo on the cupcake page ----sweet! Ugh, now I am hungry and it way past dinnertime to indulge in a snack:-(

Good stuff. Wish the bottom of the composition had a little more room.

Is that really edible? I'll have a handle! Hehe, amazing cake, and good lighting. I'm not too fond of the background though, it distracts from the cake itself (though I wouldn't want to try and move that cake by myself, for sure...).

The bricks have too much detail and aren't blurred enough to serve as a background. I think a better background would have been sea and sky. The cake is colorful and fun but the colors in your photo are relatively muted and the presentation is too plain and formal. The sand castle looks like it's falling over.

Nice to see a non-food entry that fits the challenge. Great title btw.

The cake is very cool, but the photograph could do a lot more to capture its awesomeness. There are great colors to work with, the overall balance is great, but the image is not nearly as interesting as the cake itself. THe background is far too busy and doesn't add to the image. The angle is very static and stable, not fun or whimsical like the cake is trying to convey. The cake itself if very well designed and executed, so the photograph would do much better using the same design concepts.

a truly awesome cake for sure...someone spent some time on this I know my wife likes to do these kinds of cakes, just not as big as this one. Overall nice colors, only thing I would suggest is possibly moving cake about 1'-2' from wall and get a little more bokeh if possible, unfortunately the top 1/3 of the cake to me gets lost in the brickwork somewhat, or shoot against a solid background if possible. Other than that nice shot of a cool cake.

This is a tough challenge to vote. I'm torn between "what are you trying to do here" and "what do I expect here". Further complicating matters is the question "what would I do here".

What I would expect would be a technically strong piece of eye-candy that would present the dessert in a way that I would want to at least sample it, if not order it. Along these lines I'm looking at technicals: backgrounds, distracting elements, exposure, sharpness. I'm also looking for creativity, imagination, and originality, which can make up for less than perfect technicals.

So, where does this leave me with your image?

Nice take on the challenge. I would encourage you to explore multiple perspectives with subjects such as this, in order to satisfy yourself that you have found the most dynamic and interesting presentation possible.

What a fantastical cake! I can't imagine the hours that went into it!

Wonderful cake. Lighting is nice and soft without harsh highlights. But it's so close to the brick wall that it feels more like a snapshot, imo. I would have liked it moved away quite a bit, with a more shallow depth of field to relegate the background to a background and make it less important. -6-
