eelby mariucaComment by digifotojo: The silver is striking on these eels. Eel is very tasty although it's hard to come by, you have to shop at one of the Asian food markets like Assi. |

waitingby mariucaComment by streetpigeon: When you situate yourself behind a person the viewer then advances into his or her mind and body, assuming his, in this case, world. Here I feel his calm watchfulness, slender body at ease, the aromas of fruit and the street. Okay, it's quite subjective, but still it's an opportunity to stretch your imagination and empathy. And okay, this can happen with anyone in an image, but I still think the behind view is naturally compelling.
Here I'm enjoying how the lines of placards and produce extend to an unseen vanishing point. Also the many reds spread throughout the scene. Also, as per your theme of "Food and Eating", the notice taken of the buying of ingredients, an essential stage that makes possible the meal. |

butcher shop in Sicily.DSCF5364by mariucaComment by posthumous: Indeed "our culture has totally sanitized the reality of consumption of meat," but this process began 10,000 years ago. Civilization itself is a form of sanitation. Sanity is sanitation.
The brutality of eating meat is natural. Of course, theft, murder, and rape are also natural. Civilization has been a process of deciding what to keep, what to exalt, and what to hide.
Personally, I'm more concerned with the cover up of climate change.
But sometimes (to the chagrin of the self-consciously "cultured") art is the opposite of civilization. Art pulls back the curtain. That's why a simple act of photojournalism, like this mini-essay, is also art. |
