Arna, What your picture is lacking is luminosity/luster/lighting...your leaves were probably very vibrant when you saw this. Are you shooting in RAW/JPEG? That could be a major difference...with RAW you can play with light and color better.

IMO you need some good Dodge & Burn and I'd add a Soft Focus. It would make your colors really pop.

I agree that possible with some "step photography" (that's where you take a few steps left or right) to get the rocks and water to look as good as possible, getting rid of the tree/log. It looks like you could have gone to the right and gotten in that little opening between the rocks and away from the log...therefore making a channel/line for your eyes to enter the picture and travel through the water and into the trees. And personally I'd of sharpened this more (before the soft focus...by way of High Pass Filter (applied lightly).

This all being said doesn't mean that it's not a good picture. When I started here I just tried to "beat my score"....and did ALOT of tutorials on youtube!!! Good luck...not bad for your 6 entry...FS's are the toughest by far!!! Enter more of the weekly challenges...they are more "focused" for subject.

Ok Ronnie here's my comment....

you shot this with an f/4??? To SDOF IMO you need at least an 7.1/8 - I should talk because my entries (3) have all been 5.3/5.6....rolling my eyes...

I think that the voters expect to see at least the snout and all the way to the eyes clearly...that was my first thought about your entry. I don't mind beyond the eyes but the foreground and mid-section needs to be clear (and yes, I'm going to take my own advice...grin) We are going back to this river in Apr so fingers crossed I'll get an even better shot!!!

FWIW ~ I've sharpened the pants off mine and yes, I was on the river bank about 15' away. It was past dark and I was using my flash to get the reflection in the eye...grin...it worked!!!

ETA:

I also think some dodge & burn would really improve the tones...to me they are a bit flat, not nice and rich...

I gave you an 8 as I know waterfalls are never appreciated on this site...I don't know why because capturing them isn't a walk in the park!!!

Here is my thoughts (run, run now...)

To me the waterfall is secondary because it is lost in the BG. The rocks in the front are more prominate and not as interesting. If it was my picture (wink) I would have "tried" cropping the top tier of the rocks out (right side - top) and cutting most of the first rock on the left out. Then I would have played with the shadows more because it would be pretty dark...possibly some dodge n burn??? Buy cropping it you would be bringing the waterfall forward and putting it in a better position IMO.
