| 05/03/2005 04:49:04 PM | An Incandescent Worldby madhatterComment: A really nice sunset photograph.. but to my thoughts, it is in the wrong challenge. I'm not looking to have *my* mood affected by an image in this challenge, but to see how photographers capture the moods of their subjects. You have two subjects here, and neither one of them are emoting any kind of mood to me. I may feel something, but I don't see your subjects feeling anything, and this is where I think the challenge was trying to get to. Having the human subject in some other, emotive, pose.. would have been much, much stronger. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 04:46:23 PM | I am a Rockby NordlysComment: This is quite a nice "old-time" photograph, and the expression is wonderful. I applaud your courage in submitting a photograph of this type into the DPC "NeatImage wins Ribbons!" world. The subtle intensity in this photo plays well with your title, but it would work just as well with an "untitled", as the mood shines through, and one can't help but imagine what this man is thinking. Great job.. one of the better photos I've seen. Good luck staying out of the 4s. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 04:42:29 PM | Tranquilityby prbettsComment: I'm looking more for moods from the subject in the photo itself.. not in the mood the photographer is trying to get the viewer to feel.. and, to be honest, a raging waterfall, as a subject, is one of the least tranquil things I can think of. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 04:41:25 PM | A Loved One's Sorrowby kmbr2001Comment: A little too much desaturation/saturation work here ruins the effect for me. The colors in her skin tones (especially the foot), are harsh and unnatural.. the bright flowers are anti-sorrowful, and the model almost looks like she's got a bit of a smile. Put these all together, and the only sorrow I feel from the subject is the fact that she has to lug around that umbrella. |
| 05/03/2005 04:39:27 PM | Pensiveby FirstyComment: It's amazing, the english language. One word can evoke 4 different expressions in one challenge, and 5 photographs. However, for me, pensive means a hesitant discomfort or fear.. as in a child's first encounter with petting a tame snake.. or similar circumstance. The mood I am feeling from this subject is one of contemplative anger, or frustration. More along the lines of angst, if you will. However, this is merely something for you as a photographer to consider for the future, and doesn't affect my scoring.
Now to what does.. I like the lighting, but the shadow on the eye is a little to strong. Perhaps were there less shadow there, the "frustration/anger" that I am getting wouldn't be so prominent. The furrowed brow as well, is more angry than hesitant or fearful, and this is made more prominent by the lighting also. The photo also seems a little over-sharpened, and pixelated. Personally, I would have loved to have seen a more "grainy" element to this shot, but I realize that would mean disaster in a DPC challenge, so I don't begrudge you that.
A nice portraiture overall, good blacks, a decent tonal range. A little mre work with getting the facial expression right in this lighting would have done wonders. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 04:32:08 PM | ecstasyby ursulaComment: IMO, the challenge was meant to give you a chance to evoke a mood from a subject, not induce a mood in the viewer. This, to me, does the latter (or tries to). That's not to take away from a great abstract photograph, but it just doesn't work this time. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 02:03:28 AM | ~Angry Angel~by smoon273Comment: I adore the look on her face here.. and the angle is pure genius. Focus could be tighter, but color and lighting are great. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 02:02:04 AM | On edgeby BrinComment: Personally, the whole idea of this challenge was to show a mood *from* a subject, not try and pull a mood from me.. (which ever good photograph should do anyway). Your post-processing is very moody, sure, but I just don't buy it as meeting the challenge to my satisfaction. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 05/03/2005 02:00:13 AM | Pensiveby LadeeMComment: You look more relaxed and serene than pensive. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
