boys night outby grigrigirlComment: there is something about the very stoic sort of look on her face that makes this shot facinating. I like the tones you have chosen too..sort of has a timeless feel to it which contrasts with the flashy subject matter. |

Unanswered Questionsby karmatComment: now there is an unanswered question! Very neat idea, I like the accent of the rain on the poster too, and the faraway expression on her face. The tight composition keeps our attention on the question too. well done. |

Calamity In 1881by TarbiniComment: I wonder what happened in 1881. WOW, all those kids. Very good interpretation of the challenge. The light is a bit too bright on the bottom of the marker, while the rest of it is in shadow. If you caught this during sundown, the light might have been very flattering, and complementary to the emotive nature of your subject. |

Evil femme-botby lemmingComment: interesting pose, but I think the shadows are distracting...relatedly, the light seems a bit harsh and has washed out her skintone. Check rotation too, seems to be a degree or two off. |

Maria Di Capiby zeuszenComment: without the sunglasses, this could almost remind me of renaissance art with very curve models who were not stick thin, however, I think there are too many mixed genres going on in this shot to clearly give off one message. |

Study of Male in Nudeby OneSweetSinComment: I think this would be an awesome shot if in black and white or some form of duotone, the skintone seems too red, and the whole shot seems stark because of it. I really like the post of your model, there is a lot of impact in his pose and expression. :) |

Unanswered Questions?by dacrazyrnComment: whoa. Ok, lighting is a little harsh on his left hand. This is a lot closer to your subject than I think I am comfortable with, but good focus! :) |

Blankby casualguyComment: very nice interpretation of the challenge. I wish there was more contrast to distinguish between the tones of the grass and the tones of the gravestone. How eerie to see one's own gravestone, too. I would not like to be Marvel M. Probably why I opt for cremation. |

Where do goats go?by draney4Comment: I like this composition, would have preferred a slightly bigger shot or maybe a closer crop to the goats to get closer to them, they seem a bit small in the shot as it is. Like the inclusion of the road ahead though. Fits the theme well. |

Grazing Horsesby ladpupmoeComment: Hi Peggy!
Greetings from the Critique Club
I didn't get a chance to vote on this picture during the challenge, but I hope I can offer you some comments to help you along in your photography.
Colour, Composition, Contrast:
You got fewer comments on this photography than many pictures get, but you were lucky in that all of your commenters offered you some constructive comments.
The elements I notice in your shot are the horses and the tree in the foreground. I like that you chose to frame your shot using the trees, it adds to the country feel, but because they appear to be in shadow, their colours are more saturated and more in focus than the rest of the shot. This takes away from the horses, who are already suffering from a lack of sharpness in their focus. Indeed they appear very small in the shot, and I would have liked it if you included less tree and got a bit closer to the animals.
Focus and Lighting
I agree that the colours are being drowned out by the light. Did you consider trying this shot again when the sun was lower in the sky? Perhaps nearer to sunset? (Or even just after sunrise if you are an early riser!)
The effect of the light is to wash out the colours of the grass and the horses, which doesn't hold our attention as much as it could. The colours are washed out, and a lower, softer light would have really made this shot pop.
Overall
I liked the idea here, and your composition. The colours are not true to life, the horses are far off and the lighting is flat, all of which are easily correctable technical problems which would made this shot for you. :) Happy shooting! |
