I have a 1.4 Manual Focus, and enjoy using it sometimes for the same reason.

You had a good find when you shot this. Good exposure level makes for just the right amount of detail. I would have been shivering too much to shoot below 1/2000 shutter speed LOL.

The opposing motions of the boy and steer made this turn out to be very good indeed. It's good that you got the face sharp, and everything else blurred some.

In the thumb, it looks like a cow's head with big ears peeking over the barrow. The colors work nicely in this image.

You beat me to it! I shot some using a similar technique today, and with similar results. I think I got the idea from a comment that someone made. This one is nice. It makes the flowers and plant look somewhat like a wreath, with the wall in the background. I even thought about clamping the zoom ring on the lens to a tripod , but I didn't go that far. That would allow you to get exactly what you want in the center.
