Love the feel of this. The grain softens the sky and possibly the contrast with arch as well, and echoes and balances the ripples in the water pulling the 2 parts of the picture together. As well the feathery texture of the trees fits right into this. Shading of dark to light, rule of thirds etc... too, but mostly the texture makes this very accessible. (And I don't think this is only because I have seen ugly postcards of the arch).

Shoot! Just wrote an enormous comment and lost it. In brief, I love all the elements of sea and sky and light - no one mentioned the scudding clouds above the pier echoing the wavelets just beneath the horizon - great contrast to what's going on under the pier... For some reason the composition looks stronger in the thumbnail. (Agree the framing is distracting - lines of the pier and the strong lights and darks don't need the competition/interference).

I think pineapple has hit the mark here. We need to know nothing more than what your photo tells us: we can look and look for more, try to think about who and where and why, but this forces us to accept something exceedingly simple and profound about human being.

Thought this would be nice from the thumnail - light coloured gulls against a light textured background. Truly exceeded expectations. Sweet little plump bodies and freckled heads. Just wondered if you paid ALL the models. Very nicely presented. T

I could blame it on Finland. Very taken with the triangular expanse of light at lower left being ever so casually balanced by the dark shrubbery and tiniest detail of building and solitary person at the not quite lower right, almost on the extension of first triangle. And then there is the triangle, not quite complete, made by all the trees. Play of black and white and the most subtle greys .... With such a strong and interesting composition all the elements combine. Wouldn't change a thing. I need to hear some Sibelius now.
