My daughter. Still working on portraits. This is with a flash through an umbrella 45 deg to left of camera and above her head. 2nd flash behind her to the right and reflecting off of the wall. Yellow table cloth over window as backlight. I think I need a reflecter down low to get rid of the shadows below her chin. She has a dark maroon coat and hat on, which almost totally went black....even in the color version.

Converted to B&W in PSE5.

If anyone could let me know what the proper or better locations of light sources, when you only have two flashes, should be.

a delightful smile and a wonderful pose - i am just not sure of how close the background tone is to her skin tone

I'm learning about fixed/flash lighting as well and have so far found that a great setup for one pose doesn't work for a slightly different one so there is no magic setup - I think you got it just about right and as has been said the shadows are soft and add to the shot rather than detract imho.

Am not a fan of the totally black hat and coat but agree it does frame her face well. I doubt Hannah is a fan of her freckles but I'd have liked them a little more prominent.

Great shot btw :)

Simple, honest and vibrant. Lighting is good enough to make me think redhead.

She is so cute! Great smile and I love her eyes. Since this is more of a posed thing rather than a candid, I'd rather not see the hair covering her left eye. Her eyes are beautiful and moving the hair a bit helps them get even more attention.

Nice portrait, the eyes really pop. I don't see any harsh shadows so I don't think thats really an issue.

You teach me that eye contact is important and overcomes many difficulties when taking portraits.

I think you have done a pretty good job with lighting here. Your thought on a reflector (or any white board or paper for that matter) towards the right side is a good idea.

She has an enchanting and delightful smile! I like the pose you captured and in my opinion you're doing pretty well with the lighting. There are a lot of good portrait folks here on DPC - I'm sure they can give you some excellent advice.

Jeff, she is precious! I think you did a great job. I'm trying to figure out the best location to place lights too. So I hope some of the portrait wizards, like Sonifo, will chirp in and offer their 2-cents. I'll be checking back on this one.

But I think this looks gorgeous just as it is too. I think TWMax may be right too. A total lack of any kind of shadows may make a portrait look a little flat.

As for me, I still stick to natural light whenever I can, but I'd love to learn more about indoor lighting.

Like the way her dark hat and dark coat frame her face. Nice pose. Eyes are nice and sharp, wonder if selectively sharpening up nose/cheek freckles just a tiny bit would be useful.

Nice portrait of your daughter. There are really minimal shadows, and they aren't hard, so think the lighting is good. Sometimes the total lack of shadows flattens the look too much.I especially like the sharpness/clarity of her eyes. The light out of focus background is perfect for her dark clothes.
