Too Cute, Even From Behindby WriteHeartComment: This is very cute! I really like the crisp DOF - you nailed it from the shoulders forward.
I'm guessing the low score is from people not feeling this shows a particular point of view. |

Published 1861by BrianRComment: I'm glad you like it, Brian. Very cool story. I think the score reflects the fuzziness and low contrast, plus the yellow cast. Also, I think photos of other people's art don't generally get people excited.
You might try a different composition and lighting scheme for the current "Something Old" challenge. |

Abstract Macro...Best guess?by WriteHeartComment: A nice experiment, Julie. The little shapes are interesting. I think the wide aspect ratio hurt your score, though - it doesn't have as much impact when it fills so little of the screen. I love how your commenters did guess at what it was - isn't it fun when they engage like that? :) Message edited by author 2007-10-27 00:10:09. |

walking the gangplankby krnodilComment: You got an 8 from me! I agree with you about the lighting - it's terrific! I also really like the composition, with the leaves drawing my eye to the lower left. |

Frame of Flameby kashiComment: Lea, I like the composition and the color. They both remind me of more traditional photos and art. My big problem is the blotchiness of the background. I don't know whether that's noise, JPG compression artifacts, or something else, but it distracts me quite a bit. I'd also suggest trying it with the flame centered. I normally like off-center, but here it just feels like empty space to me. |

Slice of Lifeby sherpetComment: As always, Shez, your eye for composition is terrific. I like the colors, too. In a macro challenge, though, I think people are looking for razor-sharp details, and this is quite soft. It's lovely, just not going to do well with DPC voters in this type of challenge. |

I'm cuddly, dang it.by skewsmeComment: Pretty cool to hear where this was. Nice composition of an interesting subject. The lighting's quite good, and I love the title. Amazing that you avoided any score under 4, to boot! |

Waiting for Lunchby GreetmirComment: I like the composition and what detail is there. But for a macro, it's not sharp enough to give me things to explore. Maybe bumping up the contrast would've helped your score, but if you like it, then it's good enough as is. :) |

Playing Dice with the Universeby meyersComment: Interesting composition, Rob. I like the intersecting corners and placement of the dots (pips?). I think your score got hit for two things:
1) There's no real detail in the surface of the die. That's just a fact of life with this subject. But one of the joys of macros, at least for me, is seeing details I wouldn't normally be able to see.
2) The lack of detail makes the whole face look blown out, which is a sizable portion of the photo to have no detail.
Still an interesting shot, though! |
