Distant Rainby in2truthComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Very simple, nice shot that just needs a little more to being attention to the rainbow, imho. You've caught the nice drizzly feel very well and I don't see the fg as oversaturated - after all who's to say what the trees etc in your part of the world really look like? - but because it is so brightly lit compared to the rest of the shot, draws away from the focal point. Trying to make the rainbow match the fg would look too fake, so in this case muting the fg and popping the rainbow a little more would have helped. After all, this was an Expert challenge, pretty much anything goes.
Hope this critique has been useful, feel free to PM me!

Hey Louie! Another lovely b/w from you, I can almost feel the cold and damp from here :-) The shallow dof really works well here and helps isolate the subject, and make the bg appear to be farther off in the distance. Nice leading lines and use of thirds. I do see what some say about the vignette effect being dark and/or distracting, so maybe just watch that you don't get too fond of it.
Otherwise I honestly can't pick any holes in this. Good work, glad it finished so high, and keep up the great work!

the power in the hillsby disassociationComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
For some reason this shot makes me think of War of the Worlds, with the Martians marching across Earth, devastating everything in their path. I like how you used the hydro towers as your focal point, and the big looming sky adds to the slightly ominous feel, and is that a rent in the clouds I see near the top? The scrubby hills already look like the death rays have been at work :-)
The main problem is the lack of a strong wow factor. Technically it's an OK shot, very straightforward, but just not compelling enough to make the viewer come back and look some more. A hit of saturation might have helped a little.
Still, good use of unusual elements that we don't normally see in landscapes. Keep on shooting and entering!

This is definitely a different take on the challenge, and a risky one at that. But sometimes it's better to take risks and get a lower score, than simply shoot for and churn out images that the vox populi will love.
Clearly this image resonates with people living in urban CA, so I can't squabble with them about what people are apt to see! However the lines of the waterway is a little too much, even though the horizon is at a third and not halving the image in two. Good use of leading lines, but I would have liked to see more of an angle to add dynamism and interest to the shot. The centredness is just too predictable. In terms of pp, not bad, though looking at the shadows I'd guess you shot early afternoon when the sun is at its most unforgiving. This was an Advanced challenge so you may have been able to dodge out the glare on the concrete wall at right. Finally, don't be afraid to make the most of the dimensions allowed and go for as large an image as possible. Never hurts.
