Greetings from the Critique Club!

Hmm...this is one of those head-scratchers and in more ways than one. Like a commenter has already said, I have no idea what I'm looking at - I don't even know if it's part of a car or a motorcycle. I'm guessing it's something dinged up and there is a reflection of a neighbouring vehicle in a side panel? That's the only thing I can think of.

So. It's the aftermath of a scrapeup of some sort, but it's so obscure that it really makes no sense. In terms of technicals the lighting is OK but there is no real attempt to compose a pic. The tire in bottom left is huge and out of focus and just a distraction; the actual scrape is difficult to see and appreciate. Also, looking at your settings, I am surprised that you shot handheld at 1/15; why so slow? Canon is known for its excellent ISO, you could've easily gone to ISO 600 or so and shot a little faster.

There are plenty of excellent car photos here and elsewhere on the net, if this is a favourite subject of matter of yours you would do well to go and study them and see what makes them so compelling. Learn how to shoot from different angles.

Hope this has been of help.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First rule of DPC. Read the rules. Second and all subsequent rules of DPC: See first rule. It is very, very, VERY important to read and understand not only the ruleset for challenges, which tell you what you can't do, and more importantly....what you CAN do. Like go to 1200 pixels on the longest side. More importantly you failed to follow a very simple rule which was clearly outlined in the challenge description, and did not title your image 'Aftermath' as instructed.

The photo itself is only OK. I keep going back looking at it to see something that grabs my eye and draws me in, but there's nothing there in terms of composition to act as a focal point and start telling a story. The horizon is level and the colours are nice but so little is in focus, and so little of what is in focus to be seen, that it's all too easy to give this pic a low score and move on to the next one.

So, to submit a somewhat drab photo that could easily have been 1/3 bigger and to ignore that extra rule requiring you to title it appropriately, has resulted in a very top-heavy histogram.

Moral of this story: read the rules. Then follow them. And if there is ever a little yellow flag next to a challenge descrip, it behooves you to go and read up and learn why that flag is there, and follow whatever special instructions are indicated.

Sorry to come down a little hard on you, but that's just the way it is here. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Wow, this is something else. A supermoon rising over a crazily tilting cityscape and a suited model with a light fixture for a head holding a lightbulb. Definitely searching for something! I gave this a 7 in voting. Glad I did. I like more abstract ideas brought to life like this.

I think the main problem here is more technical than anything. All the light sources are from behind, yet the model is lit from the front right (shadow cast to the left and rear). In reality the opposite would be true, the shadow should fall mostly to the front right on the ground ahead of them. Maybe a blending layer to help the model fit into the street scene? I think this is what pulled your score down. I tend to make the same sort of mistakes too so Ah feel yer pain ;-)

But you still finished in the Top Ten so it's not all that bad, and for the most part it's an interesting image and well done. Keep up the good work!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Nice use of a strong diagonal to give it a dynamic look, mostly good tones but a little too close to the Land o' Clorox for my liking in the upper right and bottom left. I do like the smooth curvy undulation in the middle (a leetle too close to the safe zone but at least it's a focal point), definitely gives it the sense of fluidity as promised in your title. Maybe voters were a little frustrated by the lack of colour and not being able to tell what kind of fluid it was meant to be - wine, tinted water, tea, coffee etc.

Hope this has been helpful, feel free to PM me

Lovely umbrella though I'm guessing it's more of a parasol...you don't often see this kind of delicate work on a brolly. Still, beautifully backlit and just enough to show detail without getting any blowouts in terms of highlights. Love the work and this time, the tight, centred composition does an excellent job of letting the work speak for itself.

Very well done and no surprise that it finished in the TT.

Wow, what a colourful entry, Marcel. Looks like a veritable traffic jam of beetles of all sorts, and I didn't even know there was such thing as an insectarium, let alone one in Montreal...must go visit someday.

The use of diagonals serves you well, it adds dynamism to the shot of what could otherwise have looked very boring and fusty in terms of comp. The only thing I can find wrong is maybe the shot came across as cluttered to most voters; there is no one beetle dominating the pic and drawing attention to itself more than the others. Still, a very pretty shot, would look great on a calendar, and it finished well, so not a bad effort.

Keep up the good work!

Excellent use of shallow dof, the white bg really offsets the man and his plight all the more. Very nice b/w even if the white is a tad bleached.

Very poignant image; what most of the commenters have already said is all I can echo. The sad state of society today, where is looks like the man has only his letteboard to communicate with. His left hand seems to show a state of palsy. Yet the expression on his face is one of stoicism and strength too. He's made it this long; a little longer won't kill him. But us showing him even the most basic human kindness might kill us.

Excellent work, keep it up!
