First impression - love the color of the mushroom against the dark background and water.

I agree with you that this isn't really an abstract. That doesn't seem to have hurt many of the entries. Still it is an awesome capture. The lighting gives great modeling on the mushroom and glistens off the water nicely. The water framing the subject works really well. The out of focus highlights in the water in the foreground are a little distracting but not much.

The composition is perfect. the eye hits the mushroom and ten follow the water around the image. Well done, as evidenced by the score from the voters.

First impression - not really an abstract

I think the main lesson here is the fact that real food rarely photographs well. Most of the food art you see in ads and on menus are not real food. Never trust an Ice Cream ad!

IMO there are many things that contributed to the low score.

1. The fish is not in focus or just is not sharp
2. It's not very abstract, this looks just like tuna on rice and some peas, and that is exactly what it is. In your notes you mention bold reds and muted colors of the rice. The reds are not bold and the rice is not muted.
3. This probably wouldn't score well in a Food challenge either. Not enough contrast, rice looks too oily, tuna looks dirty.

I've seen your work before, very strong. I am sure I am not telling you anything you don't already know.

First Impression - one of the very few true abstracts in the challenge.

I'll start by saying that not many of the entries are what I would call true abstracts. This shot is for sure.

The back lighting works well here. There's a real nice glow to the whole image. Even though your comments say you used noise reduction I still see quite a bit of noise, especially in the shadows.

The liquid feel gives a real sense of motion that is hard to capture. This shot has a lot going for it. The voters may have been too hung up on trying to figure out what it is instead of enjoying the sensory treat this image gives.

I think this shot was under rated, but that's life at DPC, right?

First impression - Neat idea with the DNA!

This shot is a good idea that could have used some more pre-shot prep. With the totally white background there is no context. I don't have any specific suggestions for the background, I just think it would have been better with one, although more difficult for sure.

I would also suggest making the ketchup more red. This challenge used the Advance Editing rules. You could have done a lot to make the ketchup redder. When I first saw the image I though the ketchup was actually pretzels.

Keep thinking up these clever ideas!
