I don't mind the flares, I like them actually, they add context IMHO. I also like the gold treatment, although it does make them look a bit artificial.

Out of water, yet the wood has water colours. Cool still life. I wonder (presumptuos on my part maybe to suggest this), but I wonder if a bit more space on the right of the photo (the shadow side) would also work.

Is that two people on the far side under the willow? It's a bit hard to tell. In this picture, I like the pattern of the willow-branches agaist the sky. As a whole, the image is not working for me, because I am not sure what to look at. It has good colours, but it is not telling a story, or just showing an idea or a pattern or something (at least not to my eyes). One idea, if you were to get closer (so to say) and take only the 1/4 part at the bottom left, it might work as an "idea" image. If you were to take just the willow branches against the sky, it might make a good pattern image. I don't know. I would also go explore in the pines to the right - pines have all sorts of possibilities for pictures.

Wow. You know what makes the image for me? The snow covered steps. They are the perfect lead-in to the image, and they don't let you get out of it again. The white at the top of the cupulas (sp?) are a very good echo to the ground/steps.
