Fly Away, Fly Away, Fly Away Homeby karmatComment: ursula: this is natural unless it's DrAchoo. there's nothing natural about shoving a dead ladybug across a window.
scalvert: refrigerated ladybug.
ursula: oh, I forgot a DrAchoo fan was here. Well there's nothing natural with torturing a ladybug across a window, either.
scalvert: well, it's not DrAchoo.
ursula: that's a relief. I get enough torture on the 6 o'clock news. |

Happy New Yearby whiterookComment: scalvert: fireworks are natural. we've had them in too many challenges to declare them unnatural now.
GeneralE: but each firework represents a conscious decision in planning and execution. I am arguing against human intelligence as being natural. I mean just look at the mess we've made of this world. And fireworks was the first application of gunpowder. You know where that led us.
scalvert: yes, but it is physics in action, all lit up and everything! |

Sleepy Lionby ErikVComment: frisca: well this is natural. even if you think that animals think, this animal is in a semi-conscious state. surely this is completely natural motion at this point.
scalvert: nothing attached to musculature is moving in a "natural" way. too many variables.
GeneralE: you can't even tell which way the head is moving.
ursula: it's a lion with three heads! not natural!
sher: that lion is so natural he scares me. |

Going homeby KHoltComment: scalvert: cross-country skiing isn't natural enough. It's gotta be downhill.
muckpond: no, dude! skiing is totally natural! cold on your face, fighting the elements, adrenaline rush! |

A Lapse In Timeby IvoryComment: ursula: this isn't natural. it's man-made.
scalvert: yes but it is a man-made object that acts completely on Newtonian principles. It's natural.
GeneralE: yes but it acts in an arbitrary way decided by man. There's no natural reason why the day has to be divided twice into twelve.
frisca: so you're saying that God must be the clockmaker, and not Man?
GeneralE: um... I think so. |

Jenga!!!by SoulMan1978Comment: scalvert: falling is Newtonian and natural. I was going to say that the movement of the hand is not natural, but there is no movement of the hand! the hand is only in one exposure.
GeneralE: yes, but that is motion of a sort. To be not there, and then there, and then not there. That is an Individual Will working in the universe. Not natural.
scalvert: hmmm you could have a point.
muckpond: knocking stuff down! totally natural! |

The Catchby brownsmComment: muckpond: yes! a boy making the play. totally natural.
GeneralE: I bet he doesn't even want to be there. Dad is making him do it. Unnatural.
scalvert: ball is natural. kid is unnatural.
muckpond: but his eye is on the ball at all times. everything he does is to catch the ball. It's natural.
scalvert: he could have caught the ball one-handed. he could have headed the ball first. he had to make a large number of decisions. not natural.
muckpond: headed the ball? that's soccer.
scalvert: most countries call it football. |

Bass Lineby gzuprukComment: muckpond: oh yeah, rock and roll is natural!
GeneralE: actually, that looks more like folk music. I think it's Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair.
scalvert: music isn't natural.
GeneralE: Pythagoras thought so.
scalvert: I'm wayyy past Pythagoras. I'm well into the 16th century. And none of Newton's Laws apply to this. This is a brain moving fingers.
sher: actually, in order to play properly, something deeper than conscious thought must be at play. Perhaps we can allow that this sort of instinctive motion is indeed natural.
ursula: it looks like he's got 11 fingers on one hand. That is NOT natural.
bucket: you never met my cousin Brunhilde.
scalvert: how did YOU get in here?? |

Follow Me Boysby JuliBocComment: sher: so shots of people walking are not natural but shots of a gull walking is natural?
scalvert: no. nothing's natural (except physics).
frisca: gulls have no Will. they are natural. everything they do is driven by instinct.
ursula: how do you know that gulls aren't thinking. have you ever looked on in the eye?
frisca: it's theologically impossible.
scalvert: ag! no theology! physics says no. Physics is going to give me another ribbon.
GeneralE: walking requires physics.
scalvert: yes, but not one single smooth motion of physics.
ursula: I don't recall seeing "single" or "smooth" in the rules.
scalvert: it's implied by natural.
ursula: that's funny. I've never seen nature be singular or smooth.
scalvert: what are you? a Quantum physicist? |
